About the authority

About NSDMA

Nagaland’s coordinating authority for disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, relief and recovery.

A proactive approach to disaster management

The Disaster Management Act, 2005 established national, state and district authorities to adopt a holistic and integrated approach to disaster management. This marked a shift from relief-centred response towards prevention, mitigation and preparedness.

The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority was notified on 22 November 2011. With support from the Government of India–UNDP Disaster Risk Reduction project, NSDMA developed its institutional structure and specialist teams to serve the state.

How NSDMA works

The day-to-day work of the NSDMA Secretariat is supervised by the Joint Chief Executive Officer through Relief & Rehabilitation, Media & Public Relations, Training & Education, Projects & Resources, Response & Communication, Research & Planning, and Establishment units.

At district level, each District Disaster Management Authority is headed by the Deputy Commissioner, supported by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, an NSDMA nodal officer, a District Project Assistant and a Statistical Assistant.
