Practical safety actions for earthquakes, fires, landslides and floods in Nagaland.

Seismic Zone V

Earthquake

Before

  • Secure shelves, overhead fixtures and heavy objects.
  • Keep beds and exits away from objects that may fall.
  • Know the location of electrical and gas shut-offs.
  • Keep water, food, medicines, a torch, radio and first-aid supplies ready.

During

  • Stay calm. Drop, cover and hold on.
  • Keep away from windows, exterior walls and unsecured objects.
  • Do not use lifts or rush onto stairways.
  • If driving, stop away from buildings, bridges and power lines.

After

  • Check for injuries and unsafe structural damage.
  • Expect aftershocks and move away from damaged buildings and power lines.
  • Avoid flames and electrical switches if gas leakage is possible.
  • Follow official announcements and do not spread rumours.

Home & settlement safety

Fire

Before

  • Install and regularly test smoke alarms.
  • Plan and practise escape routes with your household.
  • Do not overload outlets or use damaged electrical cords.
  • Store fuels and flammable liquids safely away from flames.

During

  • If clothing catches fire: stop, drop and roll.
  • Stay low beneath smoke and cover your nose and mouth.
  • Check a closed door for heat before opening it.
  • Leave the building, close doors behind you and do not re-enter.

After

  • Cool and cover burns and seek medical attention.
  • Do not enter a damaged building if heat or smoke remains.
  • Wait for emergency personnel to confirm that the structure is safe.

Monsoon & slope safety

Landslide

Before

  • Avoid building near steep slopes, drainage channels and unstable edges.
  • Keep natural drainage clear and protect vegetation on vulnerable slopes.
  • Watch for new cracks, leaning trees and changes in water flow.

During

  • Move out of the path of debris immediately.
  • Listen for cracking trees, rolling stones or unusual rumbling.
  • Be alert when stream water suddenly rises or turns muddy.
  • Warn others and contact local authorities.

After

  • Stay away because additional slides may occur.
  • Watch for flooding caused by blocked streams and debris.
  • Help children, older people and persons with disabilities reach safety.

Low-lying & urban areas

Flood

Before

  • Follow rainfall and official warning information.
  • Move documents, medicines and essential supplies above expected water level.
  • Know the safest route to higher ground.

During

  • Move to higher ground without waiting for water to rise.
  • Never walk or drive through moving floodwater.
  • Keep away from drains, riverbanks and fallen electrical lines.

After

  • Return only after authorities say the area is safe.
  • Avoid contaminated water and damaged electrical systems.
  • Photograph damage safely and report urgent needs through Citizens’ Corner.
